The great thing about the metric system is how simple it is to convert one unit to another. For instance, 6 centimeters is 60 millimeters. However, converting from metrics to standard imperial is another beast altogether.
6 centimeters is the equivalent of 2.3622 inches.
However, knowing 6 centimeters of 2.3622 inches won’t help much when figuring out the lengths of things. So, if you’d like to know what 6 centimeters looks like by eye, you can use the following # common objects as guides.
When it comes to measuring 6 inches, you don’t need to look very far. All you have to do is open your refrigerator or take a look inside your recycling bin. A standard 12-fluid-ounce Coke can measures 2.60 inches in diameter, which is equivalent to 6.6 centimeters.
However, if all you have are White Claw or Red Bull cans, which are slimmer and taller than standard cans, you’re still in luck. The tall, slim can variety measures between 2.12 and 2.25 inches wide, which is the same as 5.38 and 5.72 centimeters.
Width of Water Bottle
Water bottles are a little more consistent in terms of measuring. Regardless of the water bottle’s volume (how much water it can hold), it will maintain a consistent width of 2.25 inches. The only thing to keep in mind is that the diameter of the bottle may vary from brand to brand.
Alternatively, you can take the water bottle’s cap and use that as your reference. Most water bottle caps will measure around 1 inch wide. So, placing two of them side by side will give you a total width of 2 inches or 5.08 centimeters.
You may be a bit confused as to why there are so many battery sizes. To put it in simple terms, larger batteries are used to power more power-hungry electronics. That’s why a flashlight or a radio receiver would require a D-cell battery instead of an AAA-cell battery.
Speaking of D-cell batteries, did you know that they stand 61 millimeters tall? That means a single D battery is all you’ll need to get extremely close to the 6-centimeter mark.
If you’re an adult living in the United States, you probably recognize the importance of having a good credit score. And to boost your credit score, you might need to own a credit card. If you pay your bills on time, you probably won’t have to pay through the nose when you purchase a home sometime in the future.
But what we’re more interested in is the credit card. A credit card measures 2.12 inches in width. That means it’s only mere fractions of an inch short of reaching 6 centimeters.
For those that don’t have a credit (or debit) card and still stick to paying with cash, I feel you. Paying in cold, hard cash can be a lot more convenient—except when you receive pennies and nickels in change.
One of the benefits of having a few dollar bills in your wallet is that you can use them to measure things. Since a dollar bill is 2.61 inches wide, you will only need one of them to get close to 6 centimeters. Regardless of the denomination, your US banknote will still retain the same 2.61-inch width.
2 Half-Dollar Coins
Half-dollar coins, also known as Kennedy coins, are becoming increasingly rarer. That’s because the US Mint stopped minting them in 2002 for everyday usage. But if you have a Kennedy coin on hand, you’ll need 2 of them to measure 6 centimeters (technically, 6.122 centimeters).
Surprisingly, the $1 coin is actually smaller than the Kennedy coin. Placing 2 $1 coins side by side will give you a collective width of 5.298 centimeters or about 7 millimeters short of the 6-centimeter point.
Here’s something many of you might have in your wallet: business cards! The typical business card measures 2 inches wide, assuming it hasn’t been crumped up by staying in your wallet all these years. So, its width would be just 0.3622 inches shorter from giving you precisely 6 centimeters.
You should know that business cards come in all shapes and sizes, so there’s no such thing as a universal standard card size. There are even business cards shaped like cars, which may completely screw up your measurements.
Name Tag Sticker
Whether you’re attending an AA meeting or a business conference, you might have to slap a name tag slicker onto the front of your shirt. The great thing is that you can write whatever name you want and nobody will be the wiser!
Just make sure you write your name small enough to fit on the 3 × 2-inch surfaces of the sticker. Coincidentally, these stickers are identical to business cards in dimensions. That means the 2-inch measurement would also get you pretty close to 6 centimeters.
Are you a fan of Funko Pop!? With over 20,000 unique Funko Pops, chances are you or someone you know collects the cute little miniatures. Well, most of them are miniatures; some of them can stand 18 inches tall!
So, if you’re a collector, just look for a 2-inch Pocket Pop or a 4-inch standard Pop doll in your collection. Dividing the standard Pop in half would give you almost the entire 6 centimeters.
1.5 Ping Pong Balls
If you’re like me and don’t own a 5 × 9-foot ping pong table, you probably have a few ping pong balls on hand. It’s inexplicable why that is, seeing as how nobody in my household even likes playing ping pong.
But if you have a ping pong table or play the sport in your office’s breakroom, you probably have a good feel of how wide a ping pong ball is. It measures 40 millimeters in diameter, so 1.5 of them will get you to 6 centimeters exactly. The tricky part is trying to slice a ping pong ball in half to get the missing 20 millimeters from a single ball.
