What Is Febreze?
Procter & Gamble created and released Febreze in 1996. The carbohydrate beta-cyclodextrin is what gives Febreze its odor-fighting power. Typically derived from corn starch, beta-cyclodextrin is an 8-sugar ringed molecule that is synthesized by enzymatic hydrolysis.
In molecular form, cyclodextrin looks like a doughnut. After being sprayed with Febreze, the odor is partially dissolved by the product’s water, and the dissolved odor molecules form a complex within the “hole” of the cyclodextrin doughnut.
While the odorous molecule is still present, it is unable to activate your nose’s olfactory receptors and thus remains undetectable. Febreze can either completely neutralize odors or replace them with a pleasant scent, like a fruity or floral one, depending on the formulation you use.
Since more odor binds to the cyclodextrin as Febreze dries, the odor molecules in the air decrease, eliminating the smell directly from the source. Add a bit more water, and you can flush away the smell once and for all.

If you pay the official Febreze website a visit, you won’t find very many details regarding the size of the product. What you will find, however, is a wide range of scents that can make the air in your home or car smell wonderful.

How Do You Use Febreze?

FABRIC
Try using Febreze FABRIC to mask and eliminate odors on fibrous surfaces. Spray a bit of Febreze FABRIC on your throw pillows, carpets, car seats, mattress, and any other surface that is a chore to wash!

Should You Shake a Can of Febreze?
No, you shouldn’t.
Febreze contains pressurized nitrogen, which is the main propellent that sprays the odor-eliminating liquid out of the can. Shaking a can of Febreze or any nitrogen-filled can will cause excess nitrogen to shoot out of the can the moment you depress the button. What may happen is that your can of Febreze will run out of nitrogen, and it will be virtually impossible to spray the odor-eliminating liquid.
So, when using Febreze and other nitrogen-pressurized cans, do not shake them before use!
How Long Does Febreze Last?
On average, the aroma of a single spray of Febreze will linger for roughly 2 hours. That said, there are several factors that can affect how long the scent of Febreze lingers after applying it on a smelly spot. For instance, if you leave the window open, or if you turn on a fan, the aroma will dissipate pretty quickly.
If you use Febreze plug-in devices, a single tank of the aromatic liquid should last anywhere from 30 to 50 days in small rooms. However, the larger the room, the less prominent the aroma becomes.
Where Can You Use Febreze?
Febreze can be used virtually anywhere you want in your home, as long as it doesn’t get in your food, drink, or places where you don’t want a floral scent.
You can use Febreze to add a lovely scent to your laundry, to remove the terrible smell of your shoes, to get rid of foul pet smells, and to eliminate nose-wrinkling moisture odors from basements, bathrooms, winter clothing, and so on.
