Measuring long distances without the use of a tape or laser measure can be a challenge. The farther the distance, the more inaccurate your measurement will become if you gauge it by eye. However, if you know the general lengths of everyday objects, it can be possible to measure far distances, like 14 feet, without specialized tools.
In today’s guide, I’m going to show you 8 common items that you can use as references for measuring close to or precisely 14 feet.
16 Comic Books
In today’s pop culture, comic books play a significant role. They’ve changed over time and, like all print media, will continue to be subject to change in the future. People of all ages can enjoy them because they are a form of graphic storytelling.
A standard comic book issue will measure 10.25 inches tall, so you will need about 16 of them stacked on top of each other vertically to reach 14 feet in height. If you measure by width, you would need about 25 comic books aligned horizontally to reach the same length.
12 Shoeboxes
You may have an old shoebox in your closet right now. It will typically be made of paperboard, which is a lightweight, rigid material made of wood pulp and fibers. Or, if you care for the environment, you may rely on wooden shoeboxes to preserve the color and integrity of your favorite sneakers.
While there is no “standard” shoebox size, the average shoebox dimensions for men’s shoes will measure 14 × 10 × 5 inches. So, if you lie a dozen men’s shoeboxes lengthwise in a line, you’ll get to 14 feet exactly. If you use shoeboxes for women’s shoes (13 × 7.5 × 4 inches), you’ll need an extra box to get to 14 feet.
3 Sedans
There is a standard height for sedans, regardless of make and model, which is about 59.5 inches. Taking three typical sedans, such as a 2021 Toyota Corolla, and stacking them on top of each other would get you to about the 14-foot-height mark.
Alternatively, if you have a Ford F-150, which just so happens to have been sold the most in 2021 and towers over sedans by over a foot, you would need only 2 of them to get close to 14 feet in height.
11 40-inch TVs
Many of you probably have a TV at home, even if you only use it exclusively as a computer screen. What you should know about TVs is that their marketed size doesn’t refer to their physical size—i.e., the dimensions of the device. To figure that out, you’ll have to calculate it on your own.
The standard size of a 40-inch TV with a 16:9 aspect ratio is 15.7 × 28.2 inches. So, stacking 11 of them on top of each other would get you pretty close to the 14-foot mark. Horizontally aligned, you would need only about 5 of them to be less than an inch shy of 14 feet.
2 Crocodiles
Did you know that there are 24 recognized species of crocodiles? Also, did you know that Lolong, a 20.25-foot-long saltwater crocodile, set the Guinness World Record for being the longest crocodile ever kept in captivity?
Thankfully, not all saltwater crocodiles are as long as Lolong. On average, they’ll grow up to 2.3 meters (7.5 feet) long, meaning two of them lying snout-to-tail would give you about 15 feet—just 1 foot over the 14-foot mark.
14 2-Liter Soda Bottles
If you’re a soda junky, then there’s a good chance that you have at least one empty 2-liter soda bottle around. If you do, then you’re in luck—you can use it as a measuring tool to measure close to or precisely 1 foot.
So, using 2-liter soda bottles as your reference, measuring 14 feet should be a breeze. Simply stack 14 of them on top of each other (with their caps on), and you’ll get to about 14 feet.
1.5 2 × 4 Boards
Anyone who’s ever delved in woodworking before will probably have a good idea of what a 2 × 4 is. It’s essentially a board that measures 2 × 4 inches and 10 feet long, though what you’ll get from a lumber retailer will most likely be closer to 1.5 × 3.5 inches.
In either case, if you use the length of a 2 × 4 board, you would need almost exactly 1.5 of them to reach 14 feet. If you have a handsaw on hand, simply cut off one foot from the end of one board, and you’ll be much closer to the 14-foot point.
1.5 Ping Pong Tables
Ping pong is a fun sport to play if you’re on break or have nothing better to do. While ping pong tables come in all sorts of sizes, a full-sized ping pong table will measure about 108 × 60 inches. So, if you take the length of a ping pong table, you would have to have 1.5 of them to get pretty close to 14 feet.
Alternatively, if all you have are ping pong paddles, which measure between 9 and 10 inches, you would need between 17 and 19 of them to get the full 14 feet.
